Chapter 5

Hades sat with his back to the doorway when I entered the dining room. Even though he was waiting for me, he didn’t turn and greet me.

I cleared my throat and stepped forward, but still he did not turn around.

“You have kept me waiting,” he scolded.

“I’m sorry,” I said, taking another step forward. “But there are no clocks and the light never changes, so I guess I lost track of time.”

“Excuses!” He snapped and motioned to the chair at the other end of the long table, “Please, just take your seat.”

I walked the rest of the way to the table silently, pausing to place one of the red roses that I grew on his plate. I thought I saw the corner of his mouth twitch as he lifted the flower and set it aside.

The dead-eyed women moved in, bringing in silver domed dishes and lighting the huge silver candelabras throughout the room. The vivid red of the rose, the glowing light of the candles, the reflections in the silver dishes, all seemed unreal to me. Still, none of it could hold my attention.

I pushed the food around on my plate, taking a few bites now and then between stealing glances across the table at Hades.

He slumped in the chair, seductive and brooding. His black hair was unruly and falling into his eyes when he shifted in his chair. Above all his black eyes glittered, beautiful, but horrible in the candlelight.

He smirked when he caught me staring, “Why do you look at me like that?”

“I’m sorry.”

He shook his head and leaned forward, “No, it’s fine. What were you thinking just now?”

I blushed and looked down at my plate, “It’s nothing.”

Hades took a sip of his wine, the liquid almost shocking in color against the starkness of the room.

“It must be something,” he said.

“It’s just that you are nothing like what I would have expected when I picture what Hades should be.”

He arched one eyebrow, “How so?”

“Well,” I said and took a shaky breath. “You’re not hideous and ugly.”

“Ugly?”

“When you said you ruled the underworld, the first thing I pictured was someone with hooves and horns.”

He kicked his boot clad feet up on the table, knocking a platter of cheeses to the floor. The women scurried to clean the mess, but he seemed not to notice.

“Come here Persephone,” he commanded as he leaned back in his chair.

I bit at my lip nervously, but rose and went to him. I tried not to jump when he took my hand and placed it on his head. My fingers brushed the silken raven strands.

“See?” He said with a teasing smile as he looked up into my face. “No horns.”

I blushed and tried to pull my hand away, but he held me there, staring up at me. “What were you really thinking a moment ago?”

Looking down at him, I felt unable to lie. “Why the flowers? Why the solarium?”

“Because,” Hades said as he looked away. “Even though you don’t believe it, you are very precious to me and it pains me to see you unhappy.
